PhonePe: India’s Leading Payment App

PhonePe is India’s most widely used digital payments app, with over 600 million registered users and a 46-48% share of all UPI transactions in the country. Whether you are sending money to a friend, paying at a local store, checking your CIBIL score, or investing in gold, it has become the default financial tool for hundreds of millions of Indians. This guide covers the most asked questions about the app in one place.

What Is PhonePe?

It is an Indian digital payments and financial services platform headquartered in Bengaluru. It was founded in December 2015 by Sameer Nigam, Rahul Chari, and Burzin Engineer, and the app went live in August 2016 built on India’s government-backed Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

What started as a simple peer-to-peer transfer app has grown into a full financial services platform covering payments, insurance, lending, gold investment, mutual funds, travel booking, and more. The app is available in 11 Indian languages and is accessible to users across Tier-1, Tier-2, and Tier-3 cities. As of early 2026, it processes over 330 million daily transactions and handles 9.8 billion UPI transactions monthly.

What Is a VPA in PhonePe?

A VPA, or Virtual Payment Address, is your unique UPI identity – the address others use to send you money without needing your bank account number. Your PhonePe UPI ID looks like yourname@ybl or yourphone@ibl. This is what is vpa in phonepe in simple terms.

Where is VPA? You can find your VPA by going to your profile. To find your UPI ID or see where is upi id in phonepe, tap your profile icon, and your UPI ID will be displayed. A typical upi id example looks like: 9876543210@ybl.

To change your UPI ID in PhonePe, go to your profile settings and select the option to create a new UPI ID. Note that your existing UPI ID cannot be edited – you can only add a new one.

How to Delete PhonePe Transaction History

This is one of the most searched questions about the app. Can we delete history? The honest answer: it does not currently allow users to permanently delete transaction history from the app. All UPI transactions are stored on the NPCI network and cannot be removed by the user or by PhonePe.

How to delete transaction history, how to clear history, how to hide history – none of these are possible in the traditional sense within the app. What you can do is delete individual chat messages within the PhonePe chat feature. To delete chat or chat history, go to the chat thread, long-press the message, and select delete.

If privacy is the concern, note that your transaction history is only visible to you when logged into your account. Others cannot see your history delete options are therefore limited to the chat function only.

PhonePe Wallet: How to Use It

The PhonePe wallet is a semi-closed prepaid wallet licensed by the Reserve Bank of India. It can be used to pay at merchants that accept PhonePe, but unlike UPI payments, wallet money cannot be sent directly to another person’s bank account without going through an approved transfer process.

PhonePe wallet to bank transfer is subject to charges in some cases – check the app for current wallet to bank transfer charges. The wallet limit for loading and spending is set by RBI guidelines.

A PhonePe gift card is a prepaid voucher redeemable at over 1 lakh outlets and partner platforms. To use gift card, go to the “Gift Cards” section in the app, enter your gift card number and pin, and the balance is loaded to your account.

To redeem gift card: open the app, go to Gift Cards under the “My Money” or offers section, tap “Redeem Gift Card,” and enter the code. How to claim gift card follow the same steps. How to use gift card balance: once redeemed, the balance is available for payments at supported merchants.

Check CIBIL score in PhonePe: go to the “Credit Score” section in the app. How to check CIBIL score on PhonePe is free and does not affect your credit score.

How to Delete a PhonePe Account

To delete PhonePe account or to deactivate PhonePe account:

  1. Go to your profile in the app
  2. Scroll to “Help & Support”
  3. Search for “Delete Account” or “Deactivate Account”

PhonePe Transaction Limits

PhonePe one day limit for UPI transactions is set by NPCI and your bank. Standard UPI allows up to ₹1 lakh per transaction and ₹1 lakh per day for most users, though some banks allow higher limits. PhonePe money transfer limit and PhonePe upi limit may differ by bank.

How many transactions per day in PhonePe? Most banks allow up to 20 UPI transactions per day. How to increase PhonePe limit: this is controlled by your bank, not PhonePe – contact your bank to request a higher limit.

PhonePe Sound Box and POS Machine

The sound box is a merchant payment device that announces incoming payments via audio, helping shopkeepers confirm transactions without looking at a phone screen. PhonePe launched a Made-in-India SmartSpeaker in 2025, followed by the SmartPOD – a combined speaker and POS device that accepts both cards and QR codes.

PhonePe sound box price and speaker monthly charges vary by plan – check the PhonePe business section or contact merchant support for current pricing. The pos machine is part of the SmartPOD product line.

PhonePe vs Google Pay vs Paytm

All three are leading UPI apps in India, but they differ in focus and features.

PhonePe leads in UPI market share at 46-48%, making it the most used payment app in the country. It has the broadest financial services suite including insurance, gold, mutual funds, and loans natively within the app. PhonePe protect activated is a security framework that safeguards against fraudulent transactions.

Google Pay (GPay) is tightly integrated with Google’s ecosystem and is known for a cleaner interface and strong rewards program. PhonePe vs Google Pay often comes down to personal preference – both offer similar UPI functionality, but PhonePe edges ahead on financial services depth.

Paytm pioneered digital payments in India and still has a large merchant network and wallet user base, though it has faced regulatory challenges. PhonePe vs Paytm: PhonePe now leads on pure UPI volume, while Paytm maintains strength in certain merchant and offline payment segments.

Is PhonePe Safe?

Is PhonePe safe? Yes – PhonePe is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India and operates on the government-backed UPI infrastructure managed by NPCI. Every transaction requires your UPI PIN, which is never shared with PhonePe or any third party.

PhonePe protect activated is the app’s built-in fraud detection framework, launched in 2025. If you receive a server down notification or see a transaction failed or payment failed message, these are usually temporary technical issues and not security risks. Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, or PhonePe account details with anyone – PhonePe will never ask for these.

Fake phonepe payment photos and fake phonepe transactions are a known fraud method used by scammers. Always verify payment confirmation within the PhonePe app itself, not from screenshots shared by others.
