Amazon Payment Methods: The Complete 2026 List

AurikaAug 25, 20264 min read

amazon payment methods

Summary: Amazon accepts far more than credit cards, but the list is narrower than most shoppers expect, and several popular apps only work through a workaround rather than at checkout directly. This covers every method that works in 2026, the pay-over-time options including Amazon monthly payments, and the ones Amazon still refuses.

  • Cards, Amazon balance and gift cards are the only methods that work on essentially every order.
  • Pay-over-time options are limited by item, seller and order total, not just by your approval.
  • Several fintech apps are not accepted directly but work through a linked debit card.
  • A balance loaded to the account is the one method with no eligibility check attached.

Cards Amazon Takes Directly

The base layer is unremarkable and reliable: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover, in both credit and debit form, plus Amazon's own store and co-branded cards. Prepaid and reloadable cards generally work too, with the usual caveat that a card without a billing address on file can fail verification. Cards are also the only tender that reliably covers digital orders, subscriptions and third-party marketplace sellers without exception.

Digital Wallets

Amazon has been slower here than most large retailers, because it has little reason to hand checkout to another company. Wallet support depends on the platform and the storefront rather than being a blanket yes, and the practical route is usually to add the underlying card to your Amazon account instead of reaching for the wallet at checkout.

Paying Over Time: Amazon Monthly Payments, Klarna and Afterpay

This is the part of the list with the most rules attached. Amazon monthly payments splits an eligible order into equal instalments charged to your card, and the constraint that trips people up is that eligibility attaches to the item rather than to the shopper. The option appears on qualifying products, usually higher-value ones sold or fulfilled by Amazon, and will not appear on a basket of small items even when the total is large.

Third-party instalment providers sit alongside it, and they work differently. Rather than being an Amazon feature, they issue a single-use card number that you then use at Amazon checkout. That distinction matters because it changes who you contact when something goes wrong, and it means returns are settled between you and the provider rather than resolved on your Amazon order page.

Peer-to-Peer and Fintech Apps

The pattern across this category is consistent. Amazon does not take the app itself, but it does take the debit card the app issues. So the balance in a payment app can reach Amazon, just not as an option on the payment screen.

The catch worth knowing before you rely on it is that Amazon frequently authorises an amount slightly above the order total, and it charges when items ship rather than when you order. An app balance topped up to the exact order total can therefore fail. Leaving headroom, or loading the account balance instead, avoids the problem.

Gift Cards and Account Balance

A code redeemed to your account becomes balance, and balance is the most permissive tender Amazon has. It needs no approval, has no item restrictions, does not expire in most jurisdictions, and applies before any card is charged. It is also the practical answer for anyone who wants a hard ceiling on spending, since Amazon cannot charge past what the balance holds unless a card is attached as backup.

The limits are narrow but real. Balance cannot be cashed out, and a handful of order types, including some subscriptions and marketplace transactions, still require a card on file.

What Amazon Does Not Accept

  • Cryptocurrency, which Amazon has never accepted directly at checkout.
  • Most peer-to-peer apps as a payment option, as opposed to the debit card they issue.
  • Another retailer's gift card, which only works if it is a general-purpose card on a card network.
  • Cash, outside of specific top-up services that load your account balance in person.

Picking the Right Option at Checkout

For a normal order a card is simplest. For a large single item, check whether instalments appear on the product page before assuming they will show at checkout. And for gifting, budgeting, or paying without handing Amazon a card at all, balance is the method with the fewest conditions attached.

To top up an account balance instead of adding a card, browse Amazon gift cards.
