Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4

Summary: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026, and pre-orders are open on PS5, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net and Switch 2. The digital Standard Edition is $69.99 and the Vault Edition is $99.99, or roughly $89.99 if you qualify for the 10% loyalty discount. Any digital pre-order also unlocks the Campaign a week early, on October 16. A disc pre-order does not.

  • Standard Edition is $69.99, Vault Edition is $99.99, and upgrading later costs $30.
  • The 10% Vault discount applies to pre-orders only and never to upgrades.
  • Campaign Early Access on October 16 needs a digital pre-order, not a disc.
  • No PS4 or Xbox One version, and the game is not on Game Pass at launch.

When Does Modern Warfare 4 Come Out?

Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on Friday, October 23, 2026. Infinity Ward leads development, and three modes are in the box on day one: the Campaign, Multiplayer with 12 new 6v6 maps, and DMZ, the returning extraction mode set in a new exclusion zone called Hajin.

For anyone weighing a pre-order, October 16 is the more useful date. Buy either digital edition and the full Campaign unlocks that Friday, a week before everyone else. The head start does not extend to disc pre-orders.

The Open Beta has already been and gone, running across two weekends in late August, so beta access is no longer a reason to commit. Campaign Early Access is the live benefit now.

How Much Does Modern Warfare 4 Cost?

There are two editions on sale and $30 between them:

  • Digital Standard Edition, $69.99, the full game and all three modes.
  • Vault Edition, $99.99, digital only, with cosmetics and a battle pass stacked on top.
  • Vault Edition with the loyalty discount, roughly $89.99 for eligible players.
  • Standard to Vault upgrade after the fact, $30, on the same platform you bought on.

Those are US prices and regional equivalents vary, so check your own storefront before budgeting. The physical Standard Edition tracks the digital price at most retailers, and boxed copies are usually the first to get discounted in the weeks after a Call of Duty launch.

Standard vs Vault Edition: What You Actually Get

The Standard Edition is the whole game. Campaign, Multiplayer, DMZ, every launch map, nothing held back. Everything the Vault Edition adds is cosmetic content or battle pass value:

  • Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, unlocking Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix, with masked and unmasked variants for Price and Valeria.
  • Special Forces Operator Pack, four operators with country-specific skins and voice packs in their own languages.
  • Signature Weapon Collection, five weapons with blueprints and Apex attachments, available at launch.
  • BlackCell for one season, including 20 tier skips and 1,100 COD Points.
  • A DMZ Deployment Bonus, with contents still unannounced.

Whether that justifies $30 depends on one question: do you buy battle passes anyway? A season of BlackCell carries most of the value here, so a player who was going to buy it separately is close to breaking even. A player who ignores battle passes is paying for operator skins.

Who Gets the 10% Loyalty Discount

Activision is taking 10% off the Vault Edition for returning players, which brings it to about $89.99. You qualify if you own and have played a premium Call of Duty from 2019 onward:

  • Modern Warfare (2019)
  • Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (2020)
  • Black Ops Cold War
  • Vanguard
  • Modern Warfare II (2022)
  • Modern Warfare III (2023)
  • Black Ops 6
  • Black Ops 7

Game Pass counts, provided you played one of those titles and still hold an active Ultimate, Premium or PC subscription. A title claimed through PlayStation Plus Monthly Games counts as well. Any edition of the older game is fine.

Three conditions catch people out. The discount covers the Vault Edition only, it has to be the same platform account that owns the older game, and it does not apply to the $30 upgrade. Buying Standard now and upgrading later comes to $99.99 with no discount available, so if the Vault Edition is where you are heading, the cheaper route is to buy it outright before launch. The offer ends on October 23.

What Every Digital Pre-Order Includes

Both digital editions carry the same pre-order rewards:

  • Campaign Early Access from Friday, October 16.
  • Early access to the Open Beta, which has now passed.
  • The Hunter Killer Operator Skin, usable immediately in Black Ops 7 and Warzone, and in Modern Warfare 4 at launch. It has to be redeemed by October 23, 2027.
  • The Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, which put the Moonlit Pearl camo into Black Ops 7 instantly and unlocked a challenge for a second camo, serialized for the first 100,000 players to finish it.

Activision keeps the current list on its Modern Warfare 4 pre-order guide, which is worth a look if you pre-ordered months ago and are not sure what has landed in your account.

Disc buyers get a beta code at the point of sale but not the Hunter Killer skin and not Campaign Early Access.

Which Platforms Modern Warfare 4 Runs On

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Xbox on PC, where one Play Anywhere purchase covers console and PC
  • PC through Battle.net
  • PC through Steam
  • Nintendo Switch 2

Switch 2 is the notable one. This is the first Call of Duty on Nintendo hardware since 2013, built natively by Digital Legends with cross-play and optional mouse controls using the Joy-Con 2. Digital pre-orders opened on the eShop in late August, well behind every other platform, and boxed Switch 2 copies follow later this year.

Two exclusions matter. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version, so an older console means new hardware before you can play at all, and our console comparison for 2026 covers what that costs right now.

The game is also not on Game Pass at launch, so a subscription will not cover it. If you are used to getting Call of Duty as part of a monthly fee, the difference between PlayStation Plus and Game Pass is worth understanding before you assume it is included.

Digital or Disc?

A disc is the better long-term buy in one narrow sense: you can lend it, resell it, or keep it when the storefront moves on. Pre-ordering physically costs you three things, though. No Campaign Early Access on October 16, no Hunter Killer skin, and no route to the Vault Edition later, because the Vault Edition is digital only.

Discs exist for PS5 and Xbox Series X. There is no PC disc, and the Switch 2 boxed version arrives after launch. If you are buying physically, the honest reason is resale value, not the pre-order rewards.

How to Pay Without a Card on File

Every storefront takes a card, but a pre-order also comes out of store credit. That is the practical route if you would rather not keep a card attached to a console account, if you are buying for someone in the house, or if the money you want to spend is already sitting in crypto rather than a bank.

Gift card codes drop straight into the platform wallet, and the wallet pays for a pre-order like anything else. Redeeming a PlayStation code takes about a minute, and Xbox and Steam credit behave the same way. Topping up a wallet with a PlayStation gift card ahead of October 23 also caps what the account can spend, which is the simplest form of control if the pre-order is a gift for a teenager.

Third-party key sellers such as CDKeys often price platform credit and game keys below storefront rates, which is worth a look on a $99.99 edition. Buy from sellers with a track record: the FTC guidance on gift card scams applies to game codes as much as retail cards, and a dead code is very hard to chase once the money has gone.

Is It Worth Pre-Ordering This Early?

The rewards are thin unless you play a lot. A week with the Campaign is real value if you care about the story, and the Hunter Killer skin is usable in Black Ops 7 and Warzone today, but nothing in the pre-order changes how the game plays.

There is a reasonable case for waiting. Black Ops 7 posted the franchise's worst sales-year ranking since 2008, and reviews for this one arrive around launch rather than before it, so patience costs you a week of Campaign access and nothing else.

The loyalty discount pulls the other way. It only exists until October 23, so if the Vault Edition was always the plan, waiting makes it $10 more expensive.

Most storefronts allow a digital pre-order to be cancelled before release, but the rules differ by platform and are worth checking rather than assuming. If you would rather try the game before spending $70 on it, a disc rental through GameFly costs a fraction of that, at the price of giving up early access and the skin.

Getting Set Up Before Launch Day

PC players should sort one requirement out now rather than on the night: Modern Warfare 4 needs TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot switched on, and Activision documents both. A machine that has never had them enabled will not launch the game, and that is a BIOS job, not a settings toggle in the launcher.

Pre-loading opens ahead of both October dates. Modern Call of Duty installs are large, so clear the space in advance instead of watching a download crawl while Campaign Early Access runs without you.

If your gear is overdue a refresh, do it before launch week rather than during it. Clear footstep audio does more for your first weeks in Multiplayer than any settings tweak, and a wired headset from a brand like Logitech is the cheaper half of that upgrade.

What to Decide Before October 16

Three decisions, in order. Whether the Vault Edition's cosmetics and single BlackCell season are worth $30 to you, whether you want the disc's resale value more than a week of early Campaign access, and whether you qualify for the loyalty discount, because that one expires with the pre-order window.

If the answer to the last question is yes, buying the Vault Edition outright before October 23 is the only way to get the 10% off. And if you are funding it with store credit rather than a card, get that in place first and browse gaming gift cards so the wallet is ready when the Campaign unlocks.
