ARK is the messiest answer of any major survival game, and most of the confusion comes from people answering for the wrong version. Survival Ascended: Who Can Play Together

Ascended runs on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. On paper all three share a network. In practice the server decides:

• Private and unofficial dedicated servers: full crossplay, PC and console together, if the admin enables it.
• Official PvE servers: broadly open, though Wildcard has adjusted this more than once.
• Official PvP servers: PC separated from console since January 2024, after cheating complaints.
• Console-only official servers: PS5 and Xbox tribes together, by design.

That PvP block is the detail worth checking before a group commits. It was introduced as a temporary anti-cheat measure and has outlasted that description by some margin. If your tribe is mixed and wants PvP, a rented server is the route that works rather than the official network.

Survival Evolved: A Much Narrower Answer

The original game's crossplay barely qualifies for the name. The only pairing that works is Xbox with the Windows 10 version bought from the Microsoft Store. Steam and Epic players sit outside it. PlayStation was never connected to anything. Switch and mobile are their own islands.

Wildcard said in 2025 that further crossplay work on Evolved would be minimal, given the age of the codebase, so this is unlikely to improve. The Two Games Do Not Connect

Worth saying plainly, because it costs people money. Survival Ascended and Survival Evolved are separate products on separate networks. Owning one does not get you into the other's servers, and a tribe split between them is not a tribe. Check which one your friends are actually running before you buy, not after. What Happens to Your Progress

Cross-save on Ascended is partial. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S share progress with each other. PC does not join that link, so a character built on Steam stays on Steam.

In practice this matters less than it sounds for anyone playing on servers, because tribe data, structures and tames live on the server rather than on your machine. Single-player worlds and local saves are the ones that stay put. If your group is on a rented server, switching platform is mostly a question of whether crossplay is enabled on it.
