BNB Voucher: BEP-20, BEP-2 and the Memo Problem
Aurika•Sep 11, 2026•4 min read

Summary: A BNB voucher redeems for BNB, which exists on two different Binance chains that use completely different address formats. One of them also requires a memo. Choosing wrongly between them is the main risk, and it is a bigger one than with most coins because the two are easy to conflate under a single ticker.
- BNB Smart Chain, labelled BEP-20, uses 0x addresses and needs no memo. This is the one most people want.
- The older Binance Chain format, BEP-2, uses addresses starting bnb1 and does require a memo.
- A 0x address here looks identical to an Ethereum address, so confirm which chain you are on.
- BNB pays the fees for everything on BNB Smart Chain, so a small balance makes tokens held there usable.
Two Chains, One Ticker
BNB is the only coin in the voucher range that has carried two distinct address standards in active use, and the ticker does not distinguish them. BEP-20 runs on BNB Smart Chain, the general purpose network, and uses the familiar 0x format. BEP-2 belongs to the older Binance Chain and uses addresses beginning bnb1, with a memo field attached.
For almost everyone the answer is BEP-20. It is where the wallets, tokens and applications are, and it needs no memo. The reason BEP-2 still matters is that older wallet software and some services continue to generate those addresses, and a mismatch between the two produces a failed or stranded transfer rather than a helpful error.
The Memo, If You End Up on BEP-2
A BEP-2 address is often shared between many users, with a memo identifying whose deposit is whose. It works the same way as the destination tag on XRP, and it fails the same way: the funds arrive but nothing says they are yours, and recovery depends on the receiving service's goodwill.
So if the address you have been given starts bnb1 and comes with a memo, either enter both or find a BEP-20 address instead. Redeeming to a personal wallet on BNB Smart Chain avoids the memo question entirely, which is the simpler path.
Why 0x Is Not Enough Information
BNB Smart Chain uses the same address format as Ethereum, and that has a specific consequence worth spelling out. Seeing 0x tells you the address is one of several compatible networks, not which one. Your wallet may well hold the same 0x address on both Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, in which case funds sent to the wrong chain are recoverable by switching networks in the wallet. If the address belongs to a service that only watches one chain, they may not be.
This is the same trap that makes Tether the riskiest voucher to redeem, and the same fix applies: read the network name on the wallet's receive screen and select that exact network at redemption.
What BNB Is Actually For
The strongest reason to take a BNB voucher has nothing to do with the price. BNB is the fee currency for BNB Smart Chain, so anyone holding tokens on that network needs a little of it to move them. A wallet full of BEP-20 tokens and no BNB is stuck, exactly as an Ethereum wallet with no ETH is stuck, and for the same reason described in the explainer on gas fees.
Fees on BNB Smart Chain are low, so a small voucher goes a long way as fee money. That is a practical purchase in a way that buying BNB as an investment is not, and it is the use case where this voucher clearly beats the alternatives.
One structural note for completeness. BNB is closely tied to a single company's ecosystem, which is a different risk profile from a coin with no issuer behind it. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason not to treat it as equivalent to Bitcoin.
Pick BEP-20 Unless You Know Otherwise
The whole decision comes down to one line: choose BNB Smart Chain and a 0x address unless something specifically requires the older format. Confirm on the wallet's receive screen that the 0x address you are pasting is a BNB Smart Chain address and not an Ethereum one. If you do end up on a bnb1 address, treat the memo as mandatory. And if the purpose is fee money for tokens you already hold, a small denomination is all you need.
With the chain confirmed, you can pick up a BNB voucher.
