Some crypto debit cards can be added to a Google account as ordinary Visa or Mastercard entries, and those do work. As with Apple Pay, the issuer converts your crypto to dollars before Google sees the charge. Google Play or Google Pay? They Are Not the Same Thing

Subscriptions the Credit Can Cover

Why the Card Has to Match Your Country

Google enforces this harder than most. A Play card can only be redeemed in the country it was bought for, in that country's currency, and your Google Play country is set on the account rather than by where your phone happens to be.

If you see a message that the code cannot be redeemed, the country is the first thing to check. Google's troubleshooting page confirms that a card bought for another country will not convert, and that changing your Play country does not retroactively fix a mismatched card.

Changing the country on a Google account is also not casual. Google allows it roughly once a year, requires a local payment method, and any existing balance stays behind in the old country. If you moved recently, sort the account country out before buying anything.
