Sniper Games: The Best Picks on PC, Console and Browser

sniper games

Summary: Sniper games are shooters built around waiting rather than reacting, which makes them a genre apart even though they share a camera with everything else. Sniper Elite is the series that defines it, Sniper Ghost Warrior and Hitman own the edges, and the free end lives almost entirely on mobile and in the browser.

  • Sniper Elite 4 is the entry point, not the newest one. It is the best-reviewed game in the series and nothing since has replaced it.
  • The genre splits by patience. Simulation-heavy games measure the shot in minutes of setup, arcade ones in seconds.
  • Free sniper games are almost all mobile, and almost all of them monetise through in-game currency rather than an upfront price.
  • Browser sniper games are a separate, much older tradition that survived the death of Flash and still runs on anything.

The appeal here is unusual for a shooter. Most of the genre rewards reflexes, and this corner of it rewards sitting still. A good sniper mission is mostly observation, repositioning and deciding which of three guards has to go first, with the actual shot lasting under a second. That is either the most tedious thing in games or the most satisfying, and there is not much middle ground.

What Makes a Sniper Game Different From a Shooter

Three design decisions separate the two. Distance, which turns every engagement into a planning problem rather than an aiming one. Consequence, because a missed shot usually alerts an entire map and cannot be walked back. And downtime, since the gap between opportunities is where the tension actually lives.

The simulation end adds bullet drop and wind, so the reticle is a starting guess rather than an answer. The arcade end removes both and leans on spectacle instead. Neither is more correct, but they attract completely different players, which is worth knowing before you buy. If you want the broader genre rather than this slice of it, the wider shooter roundup covers everything that is about reacting quickly instead.

Every Sniper Elite Game in Order

Rebellion has been making these since 2005, and the mainline series runs to six entries. They are only loosely connected, so release order is a recommendation rather than a requirement.

  • Sniper Elite (2005). Berlin, 1945. Historically interesting, mechanically superseded. Skip unless you are completionist.
  • Sniper Elite V2 (2012). The reboot, and the one that introduced the X-ray kill cam the series is now known for. Remastered in 2019 if you want it to look current.
  • Sniper Elite 3 (2014). North Africa, and the first move towards open levels rather than corridors. The transition shows.
  • Sniper Elite 4 (2017). Italy, and the best-received game in the series by a clear margin. Large sandbox maps with several viable approaches each. Start here.
  • Sniper Elite 5 (2022). France, and the first built for current consoles. Adds Invasion mode, where another player drops into your campaign as an enemy sniper hunting you.
  • Sniper Elite: Resistance (2025). Runs parallel to the fifth game with a new lead, Harry Hawker. Arrived on Game Pass at launch, which is the cheapest way in if you subscribe.

Around the mainline sit the spin-offs: the Zombie Army games, which take the same engine somewhere much sillier, and two VR entries. Rebellion's own page for Resistance lists the platforms it actually shipped on, which is worth checking because the series has a habit of arriving on some formats years late.

The Best Sniper Games Beyond Sniper Elite

One series should not define a genre. Four others do something it does not.

  • Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2. Built around extreme-range shots at distances the competition does not attempt. Rougher than Sniper Elite everywhere else, and worth it for that one thing.
  • Hitman: World of Assassination. Not a sniper game, except for the Sniper Assassin maps, which are the purest expression of the fantasy anywhere: one position, one rifle, a crowd of targets and a puzzle about ordering.
  • Arma 3. The simulation extreme. No concessions, a genuine learning curve, and the only place where the setup can legitimately take twenty minutes before anything happens.
  • Metal Gear Solid 3. For one boss fight. The duel against The End is still the best single sniper encounter ever designed, and it can last an hour or be skipped entirely if you are clever.

Worth noting that the most famous sniper sequence in games is a single level in a military shooter rather than a sniper game at all. Call of Duty 4's All Ghillied Up set the template every mission since has copied, and the current Call of Duty still ships at least one of these per campaign.

Free Sniper Games

There is no free equivalent of Sniper Elite, and there probably will not be, because the genre is single-player and single-player does not suit a free-to-play model. What exists instead is mobile.

Sniper 3D and Hitman Sniper are the two worth your time, and both are structured as short contract puzzles rather than campaigns. They are genuinely playable without spending, with the usual caveat that progression slows down at exactly the point the game expects you to reach for your wallet.

If you do decide to spend, the in-app purchase is rarely the cheapest route, because the mobile store's cut is priced in. A top-up service such as UniPin usually works out better per unit of currency, and it covers most of the free-to-play catalogue rather than one title.

Sniper Games Online and in the Browser

Browser sniper games are their own tradition, descended from the Flash era and now rebuilt in HTML5. They are short, crude and instant, which is exactly the appeal: a contract takes ninety seconds and nothing needs installing, so they run on hardware and networks that will not tolerate anything larger.

Multiplayer sniping is a different proposition and a much harder one, because a human target moves unpredictably and shoots back. Sniper Elite 5's Invasion mode is the most interesting version, since it makes you the hunted rather than the hunter. Battlefield and the larger battle royales support long-range play without being built for it.

If it is the ranged, patient half of military multiplayer you are after rather than sniping specifically, the free-to-play war games are a reasonable substitute. Wargaming has been running that formula for well over a decade, and the sniper view in World of Tanks scratches a similar itch without the setup cost.

Buying Sniper Games Without Paying Full Price

This is a genre with almost no reason to buy at launch. Sniper Elite 4 is nine years old and better than most of what followed, the older entries sell for pocket change, and the whole back catalogue goes deeply discounted several times a year. Watching the seasonal sale calendar will get you four of these for the price of one new release.

Between sales, a key marketplace like Gamivo tends to carry the older Sniper Elite entries and the series bundles well below the store price. Read the region line on the listing before the number convinces you, since that is where these go wrong.

Patience Is the Actual Skill

People bounce off this genre for a predictable reason: they play it like a shooter, rush the first vantage point, miss, and spend the rest of the level being hunted. The games are not difficult so much as differently paced, and the adjustment takes about one mission.

So start with Sniper Elite 4, play the first level twice, and decide on the second attempt rather than the first. If it lands, the rest of the series and everything above is waiting, and a Steam gift card covers most of it without going near a card.
