What is a CD Key? Game, Steam and Windows CD Keys Explained

Browse any game deals site and most of the offers are CD keys rather than store purchases. They are often cheaper than buying the same game directly from Steam or the console store, which raises the obvious question of what exactly you are buying and whether it is above board.

What a CD Key Is

A CD key is a string of letters and numbers that proves you bought a licence for a game. The term dates from the era of boxed PC games, when a product key printed on the CD case unlocked the installer. Today the disc is gone but the idea is the same: you enter the key on a platform, the platform marks it as used, and the game appears in your library for good.

Each key works once. After activation it is permanently tied to the account that redeemed it and cannot be moved to another.

How to Activate a Steam CD Key and Keys on Other Platforms

• Steam: in the client, Games > Activate a Product on Steam.
• Epic Games Store, GOG, EA app and Ubisoft Connect: each has a Redeem Code option in its launcher or account page.
• Xbox: redeem.microsoft.com or Store > Redeem on the console.
• PlayStation and Nintendo: the Redeem Code option in PlayStation Store or Nintendo eShop.

A Steam key will not work on Epic and an Xbox key will not work on PlayStation, so the platform in the product title matters more than anything else on the page.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 CD Keys

The same term is used for Windows. A Windows 10 or Windows 11 CD key is a 25-character product key that activates the operating system through Settings > System > Activation. Many PCs never need one, because a digital license is already tied to the hardware, so check the Activation page before buying.

Minecraft and Other Popular CD Keys

A Minecraft CD key for Java Edition is redeemed on the Minecraft website or in the launcher and attaches the game to your Microsoft account, while Bedrock codes for Windows go through the Microsoft Store. CD Key vs Gift Card

A CD key unlocks one specific game. A gift card adds money to your account that you can spend on anything in that store. Why CD Keys Are Often Cheaper

Publishers sell keys in bulk to retailers and bundle sites at a discount, and those sellers compete on price. Keys are also priced by region, so a key made for a cheaper market can sell for less than the same game in your local store. That second point is where region locks come in.

Authorised sellers get their keys straight from publishers. Bundle and deal stores such as Fanatical work this way, which is why their keys are cheap without being risky.

Region Locked CD Keys

Many keys are labelled Global, EU, US or a specific country. A regional key will refuse to activate on an account registered elsewhere, and on some platforms it will activate but refuse to run. Are Cheap CD Keys Legit?

Most are. The risk sits with open marketplaces, where anyone can list keys. A small share of those keys were bought with stolen cards or taken from giveaways, and when the publisher spots the fraud it can revoke the key, removing the game from your library months later. Buyer protection on those sites exists for exactly that reason.

• Prefer authorised resellers, or marketplace sellers with long histories and high ratings.
• Be wary of new releases priced far below every other store.
• Activate the key straight away so any problem shows up while the seller's guarantee still applies.
• Never buy "account" listings that give you someone else's login instead of a key.

Where People Buy CD Keys

Beyond the official stores, key sellers fall into two groups. Retail-style shops such as CDKeys sell from their own stock, while marketplaces such as GameSeal connect you with individual sellers. Both can be cheaper than the platform store; the marketplace route just needs a closer look at who is selling.

Check the Platform and Region Line First

Before paying for any key, read three things on the listing: the platform it activates on, the region it is locked to, and who is selling it. If all three fit your account and the seller is reputable, a CD key is simply a cheaper way to buy the same game.
