Which Stores Take Apple Pay?

apple pay

Summary: Apple Pay works at the large majority of big US chains in 2026, including Walmart, Target, Costco and Home Depot. Acceptance is not universal though, and it often varies by counter, pump or lane inside the same store. This list covers the major national retailers, what works where, and the exceptions worth knowing before you reach the till.

  • Most national chains now accept Apple Pay at every staffed register and self-checkout lane.
  • Acceptance can differ inside one retailer, since fuel pumps, pharmacy counters and in-app checkout are often run on separate systems.
  • A few large chains held out for years while pushing their own wallet, and a couple still limit where contactless works.
  • Apple Pay handles the payment, not the funding source, so a gift card balance is still applied separately.

How Apple Pay Acceptance Works in Practice

Apple Pay rides on the same contactless standard as a tap-to-pay bank card. If a terminal has the contactless symbol and the retailer has not switched the feature off, Apple Pay goes through. That is why acceptance questions rarely have a simple yes or no answer: the terminal at the main register, the one at the pharmacy counter and the card reader on a fuel pump can all be different ages running different software.

It also means acceptance changes without announcement. A chain that refused contactless for years can enable it in a software update, which is roughly what happened across US grocery through the early 2020s.

Grocery and Warehouse Chains

Groceries are where the answer used to vary most, because several of the biggest names were building competing wallets of their own.

  • Walmart is the long-standing exception. Shoppers asking does Walmart have Apple Pay are usually surprised by the answer, because Walmart pushed its own QR-based wallet rather than enabling NFC at the terminal.
  • Costco is a yes inside the warehouse, but the question does Costco take Apple Pay gets a different answer at the gas pump and at the food court, which run on their own hardware.
  • Kroger resisted contactless the longest of the major grocers, promoting Kroger Pay instead, and its banner stores did not all move at the same pace.
  • Whole Foods, Publix, Safeway and Aldi are straightforward yeses at the register, including self-checkout.

Big-Box and General Merchandise

Target was an early holdout that has since become one of the most reliable places to tap, and anyone wondering does Target take Apple Pay can expect it to work at staffed registers, self-checkout and in the Target app. The wrinkle is that Target keeps its own savings and payment features in Target Circle, so the cheapest way to pay and the most convenient way to pay are not always the same tap.

Home Improvement and Hardware

Hardware retail was slower to modernise than general merchandise, so this is the category where an older terminal is still plausible. Shoppers asking does Home Depot take Apple Pay will find it accepted across stores, with contractor desks and rental counters the most likely places to hit an exception. Lowe's, Ace Hardware and Ikea all take contactless at the register as well.

Coffee, Fast Food and Everyday Stops

Quick-service chains are almost universally contactless now, and the interesting question has shifted from whether Apple Pay works to whether using it costs you rewards. Starbucks, McDonald's and Taco Bell all accept it, but each runs a loyalty programme that tracks purchases through its own app. Paying with Apple Pay at the counter can mean the transaction never reaches your rewards balance, which is why regulars often load the app instead.

Where Apple Pay Still Runs Into Limits

  • Fuel pumps lag behind store interiors, and pay-at-pump often falls back to inserting a card.
  • Pharmacy and service counters sometimes sit on separate terminals that were not upgraded with the front of the store.
  • Contactless transaction limits still apply in some regions, so a large basket may prompt for a card and PIN instead.
  • Franchised locations set their own hardware, so a yes for the brand is not always a yes for the specific store.

What to Check Before You Tap

The reliable test is the terminal rather than the retailer: look for the contactless symbol, and have a physical card ready for pumps and service counters. If you would rather fix the funding side than the tapping side, a prepaid balance sidesteps the question entirely, since it is applied at checkout no matter which wallet the store supports.
