Summary: Aragon is open-source software for building and running DAOs, organizations governed by on-chain votes instead of managers. It launched on Ethereum in 2016 and its ANT token once governed the project. In November 2023 the Aragon Association dissolved and offered ANT holders a fixed ETH payout per token, a window that closed in November 2024. The Aragon tools themselves live on, but ANT no longer has a role.
- Aragon lets anyone launch a DAO with voting, treasury and permission tools.
- The Aragon Association dissolved in 2023 after a long dispute over its ETH treasury.
- ANT could be redeemed at 0.0025376 ETH per token until November 2, 2024.
- The Aragon App and Aragon OSx framework are still developed for DAO builders.
What Is Aragon?
Aragon was founded in 2016 by Luis Cuende and Jorge Izquierdo and raised roughly $25 million in its 2017 token sale. The goal was to make it easy for anyone to create an organization that runs on code: members vote with tokens, approved proposals execute automatically, and the treasury sits in a smart contract rather than a bank account.
Over the years Aragon released several products, from the original aragonOS and Aragon Client to Aragon Court for disputes and, more recently, the Aragon OSx framework and Aragon App. Thousands of DAOs have been created with its tools, including some of the earliest on Ethereum.
What Is Aragon DAO Tooling Used For?
If you're new to the idea, a DAO in crypto is a group that makes decisions through token votes recorded on a blockchain. Aragon supplies the building blocks so a team doesn't have to write those contracts from scratch.
- Governance: token or member voting, with rules for quorum and approval thresholds.
- Treasury: shared funds that only move when a proposal passes.
- Plugins: modular permissions, so a DAO can add or change how it works without redeploying everything.
- No-code setup: the Aragon App lets non-developers launch a DAO through a web interface.
Aragon Crypto: What Was ANT?
ANT was Aragon's governance token. Holders could vote in the Aragon DAO, and the token was meant to steer the project's direction and its large ETH treasury. In practice, the Aragon Association, a Swiss non-profit, kept control of most of that treasury, and the gap between what the treasury held and what ANT traded for became a problem.
Why the Aragon Association Dissolved
In 2023 ANT was trading below the value of the ETH backing it, which drew in investors known as the Risk Free Value raiders. They bought ANT intending to vote to distribute the treasury. The Association called it an attack and pulled back plans to hand the treasury to token holders, which angered parts of the community further.
In November 2023 the Association announced it would dissolve. It placed 86,343 ETH in a redemption contract and let holders swap ANT for 0.0025376 ETH each. Redeemed tokens were burned, and the Association said ANT would have no purpose afterwards. About $11 million was kept back to cover remaining obligations, and the product team carried on as a separate company.
If You Still Hold ANT
The official redemption window closed on November 2, 2024. Some ANT may still trade on secondary markets, but it carries no governance rights or claim on the treasury. Be wary of anyone offering a late redemption: fake claim sites and emails are a common way to drain wallets, and an inbox filter like Clean Email can help weed them out. Never connect your wallet to a site you reached from an unsolicited message.
Aragon Blockchain Tools Today
Aragon isn't its own blockchain; its contracts run on Ethereum and compatible networks. The team still develops Aragon OSx and the Aragon App, and existing DAOs keep running on them. If you take part in a DAO and hold its tokens or treasury keys, a hardware wallet such as Ledger is a sensible way to sign votes and transactions without exposing your keys online.
What Aragon's Story Teaches About Governance Tokens
Aragon built some of the most widely used DAO software in crypto, yet its own token ended in a buyout. The lesson is that a governance token is only as meaningful as the control it really gives holders. Before buying one, check who controls the treasury, how votes are enforced and what happens if the founding organization steps away.
