Summary: Activate an American Express Gift Card at balance.amexgiftcard.com or by calling the number on the back, using the card number, Valid Thru date and security code. For online orders, register your name and billing ZIP code first, since a card with no address on file is usually declined. The card then works like a credit card anywhere American Express is accepted in the US, except for recurring billing and ATMs.
- Activation takes a few minutes online or by phone.
- Registering a billing address lets you use the card online and by phone.
- The card works wherever American Express is accepted in the US and DC.
- It cannot be used for recurring billing or at ATMs.
Do You Need to Activate an Amex Gift Card?
Some American Express Gift Cards arrive ready to use, and others need activating before the first purchase, especially cards bought in a store. If the card came with an activation sticker or instructions, follow those. If you are not sure, activating it anyway does no harm.
How to Activate an American Express Gift Card
- Go to balance.amexgiftcard.com, or call the toll-free number on the back of the card, 1-888-846-4308.
- Enter the card number, the Valid Thru date and the security code shown on the card.
- Confirm the details to complete activation.
- Write down the card number and 4-digit card identification code, and keep them apart from the card in case it is lost.
Register a Billing ZIP Code for Online Use
This is the step most people miss. American Express says registering your card is mainly a fraud protection measure, and it is what allows the card to be used for online and phone orders. A new gift card has no address on file, so online checkouts that check the billing address will decline it until you register one. If you shop on public Wi-Fi, a VPN such as NordVPN adds a layer of protection when you type in card details.
- On the Amex gift card site, find the option to register your card or add a billing address.
- Enter the card number, then your own name and billing address, including the ZIP code.
- At checkout, type exactly the same name, address and ZIP code you registered.

Where You Can Use an Amex Gift Card
An American Express Gift Card works virtually anywhere American Express cards are accepted in the United States and the District of Columbia. American Express eGift Cards work with US-based online, phone and mail-order merchants that take American Express. Two exceptions apply: the card cannot be used for recurring billing, such as subscriptions, or at ATMs. For comparison, our guide to the Vanilla Visa gift card covers how the Visa equivalent works.
In a store, swipe or insert the card and choose Credit. Online, choose to pay by credit card rather than gift card, and enter the card number, expiry date and security code as you would with a normal card. To split a purchase, tell the cashier how much to charge to the gift card and pay the rest another way. It works at US retailers that take American Express, from department stores to brands like Skechers.
Why an Amex Gift Card Gets Declined
- The card has not been activated yet.
- No billing address is registered, or the ZIP code at checkout does not match.
- The merchant is outside the US or does not accept American Express.
- The purchase is a subscription or other recurring charge.
- The order costs more than the balance and was not split.
If the Valid Thru date on the card has passed, contact American Express Gift Card customer care at the number on the back rather than assuming the money is gone.
A Short Checklist Before Your First Purchase
Activate the card, register your billing address, and check the balance so you know how much to put on it. With those three things done, it works like any other card at checkout.
