Summary: Buying a gift card normally involves no sales tax, because the card is treated like cash and the tax is charged later, on whatever you buy with it. Giving gift cards to friends or family is covered by the federal gift tax exclusion, which is $19,000 per recipient for 2026. The one case where gift cards are always taxable is when an employer hands them out, because the IRS treats them as wages at any amount.
- In the US there is no sales tax on the card itself, only on taxable items bought with it.
- Personal gifts up to $19,000 per person per year need no gift tax return.
- Gift cards from an employer are taxable wages, even a $10 coffee card.
- In the EU and UK, VAT depends on whether the voucher can be spent on one thing or many.
Do You Pay Sales Tax on Gift Cards?
Not when you buy one. In the US a gift card is treated as a way of paying, much like cash, so the purchase itself is not subject to sales tax. If you buy a $50 card, you pay $50, plus any separate purchase fee that prepaid Visa or Mastercard cards often carry. That fee is a charge from the issuer, not a tax.
Tax comes in when you spend it. The store charges sales tax on the taxable items in your basket, exactly as it would for cash, and the card pays for the total including tax. That is why a $50 card does not quite cover a $50 item in a state with sales tax.
Is There Tax When You Give Someone a Gift Card?
For almost everyone, no. A gift card given to a friend or relative is a personal gift, and the federal gift tax only becomes relevant above the annual exclusion, which is $19,000 per recipient for 2026. Below that there is nothing to report. Above it, the giver, not the recipient, files a gift tax return, and tax is actually due only after a very large lifetime exemption has been used up. The person receiving a personal gift card owes no income tax on it.

Are Gift Cards From Your Employer Taxable?
Yes, always. The IRS treats gift cards as cash equivalents, and its guidance on de minimis fringe benefits says cash and cash-equivalent items from an employer are never excludable from income, whatever the amount. A holiday turkey can be a tax-free perk. A $25 grocery gift card cannot.
In practice, the value of the card should appear on your W-2 as wages, with income tax, Social Security and Medicare withheld. Some employers gross up the card, paying a little extra so the employee keeps the full face value after tax.
What About Gift Cards Won or Earned Online?
It depends on why you received the card. A gift card won in a contest or sweepstakes is generally taxable income. A card received as a rebate on something you bought is usually treated as a discount on that purchase rather than income. Cards earned through survey or task apps are payment for your time, so they generally count as income too.
Gift Cards and VAT in the UK and EU
Outside the US the question is VAT rather than sales tax, and since 2019 EU rules split vouchers into two types. A single-purpose voucher, where the place of supply and the VAT due are known when it is sold, such as a card for one retailer in one country, has VAT charged when the voucher is sold. A multi-purpose voucher, which can be spent on goods with different VAT treatment, has VAT charged only when it is redeemed. The UK uses the same split. For the shopper the price is the same either way, and the difference mostly matters to the businesses selling the cards.
Paying for Gift Cards With Crypto
If you buy a gift card with cryptocurrency, the card itself is still untaxed, but spending the crypto can be a taxable event. In the US and many other countries, paying with crypto counts as disposing of it, so any gain since you acquired the coins may need to be reported. Our guide on whether you pay taxes on crypto explains how that works.
Records for Businesses That Give Gift Cards
Businesses that hand out cards to staff, clients or customers need a record of who received what and when, both for payroll and for any deduction. Gifts to clients are deductible only up to $25 per recipient per year, while cards for employees run through payroll as wages. Keeping receipts digitised and searchable, for example with a scanning and text recognition tool like ABBYY, makes year-end much easier.
Who Owes Tax, and When
For a gift card bought in a store and given to a friend, the picture is simple: no sales tax on the card, sales tax on what it buys, and no gift tax below $19,000 per person. Employer cards are the exception that catches people out, and paying with crypto adds a reporting step of its own. Rules differ by country and situation, so ask a tax professional about anything beyond everyday gifts. When you are ready to buy, you can browse gift cards for any occasion.
