Does Costco Take Apple Pay? Warehouse, Gas Pump and Online

Does Costco Take Apple Pay

Summary: Yes, Costco takes Apple Pay at its US warehouse registers and at its fuel stations, but with a condition no other retailer imposes: the card inside your Apple Wallet has to be a Visa or an eligible debit card. Costco's US credit network is Visa-exclusive, so a Mastercard or American Express tapped through Apple Pay will be declined. Online is different again, because Apple Pay does not appear on Costco's own list of accepted payment methods for Costco.com.

  • Apple Pay works in warehouses and at Costco fuel stations. The wallet is fine; the network inside it is what matters.
  • Visa only for credit. Mastercard, American Express and Discover are refused at the register whether you tap or swipe.
  • At the pump, Apple Pay is the mobile wallet Costco lists. Google Pay and Samsung Pay are not, even though both work inside the building.
  • Costco.com lists Visa, Mastercard, PIN debit and Costco Shop Cards, and does not list Apple Pay at all.

Yes, but Only With a Visa in Your Wallet

Costco's own list of accepted payment methods names mobile payment, Apple Pay included, alongside all Visa cards, most PIN-based debit and ATM cards, Costco Shop Cards, cash, EBT and a few specialist health-benefit cards. That list is the thing to read before a first trip, because the credit card rule is stricter than anywhere else you shop. Apple Pay is not a payment method in its own right, it is a container for a card, and Costco only accepts Visa credit at the register. So the tap succeeds or fails on what you set as your default card.

The practical fix takes ten seconds. Before you get to the till, open Wallet, check which card sits on top, and move a Visa to the front if it is not there already. A declined tap at Costco almost never means Apple Pay is broken. It means an Amex was on top.

Why Costco Only Takes Visa

This is a deliberate cost decision rather than a technical limit. Costco runs one exclusive credit network at a time and passes the savings into its prices. American Express held that position for sixteen years until June 2016, when Visa replaced it and Citi became the exclusive issuer of the co-branded card. Interchange fees on Visa are the lowest of the major networks, and an exclusive deal pushes them lower still. That is also why the Costco Anywhere Visa earns its strongest rates on Costco fuel and on travel, including Costco Travel, which is worth remembering if you tend to book accommodation on a card rather than through a package.

How to Pay With Apple Pay at a Costco Register

Nothing about the tap itself is unusual. The membership check is the part that differs from a normal shop.

  • Show your membership card or the digital card in the Costco app at the entrance.
  • At the register, confirm a Visa is your default card in Wallet.
  • Double-click the side button on your iPhone, or the side button twice on an Apple Watch.
  • Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  • Hold the device near the reader until it confirms.

Staff also check that the name on the payment card matches the membership, so Apple Pay does not get you around borrowing somebody else's membership.

Does Costco Gas Take Apple Pay?

Yes, and this is where Costco's rules get genuinely odd. Apple Pay is the mobile wallet listed for US fuel stations, while Google Pay and Samsung Pay are not, even though both are accepted inside the warehouse a hundred metres away. The card in the wallet still has to be a Visa or an eligible debit card.

  • Scan your membership card at the pump first. Payment comes second, and the pump will not start without it.
  • Then tap your iPhone or Apple Watch on the reader, or insert a Visa or PIN debit card.
  • Costco Shop Cards work at the pump too.
  • Cash does not. Neither does EBT, or any non-Visa credit card.

Android members do report tapping through with Google Pay at some stations, so acceptance may be running ahead of the published list. Treat that as location-dependent rather than reliable, and carry a card if you are not on an iPhone.

Apple Pay on Costco.com Is Not on Costco's Own List

Worth being precise here, because a lot of pages assert the opposite. Costco's published list for Costco.com covers all Visa cards, the Costco Anywhere Visa, Mastercard, most PIN-based debit and ATM cards, and Costco Shop Cards. Apple Pay is not on it. The reversal that catches people is the Mastercard line: a Mastercard that gets refused at the warehouse register works perfectly well on the website.

So plan for the channel rather than the brand. In store, Visa or a wallet holding a Visa. Online, a typed card number, with Mastercard back on the table.

Everything Else Costco Takes in the Warehouse

The full warehouse list is longer than the Visa headline suggests:

  • All Visa cards, including the Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi.
  • Most PIN-based debit and ATM cards.
  • Costco Shop Cards.
  • Cash.
  • Personal cheques from current members, and business cheques from current Business Members.
  • Traveller's cheques.
  • EBT cards.
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
  • FSA and HSA Visa or Mastercard debit cards, but only at the pharmacy, optical and hearing aid counters.
  • Filtered Spend Visa and Mastercard products, plus InComm and Optum MedFlex health-benefit cards.

What Costco Will Not Take

Short list, and every item on it surprises somebody at the front of a queue:

  • American Express and Discover credit cards, anywhere.
  • Mastercard credit cards in the warehouse or at the pump, despite working on Costco.com.
  • Cash at fuel stations.
  • EBT at fuel stations, on Costco.com, or towards a membership.

If You Do Not Have a Visa Card

The Costco Shop Card is the workaround, and it is more flexible than most store cards. You can buy one with a payment method the warehouse would refuse, then spend it at the register or at the pump, which turns a Mastercard into something Costco accepts. Shop Cards do not expire, can be reloaded, and can be used by someone who is not a member, which makes them the standard way to send a non-member into a warehouse. It is also a sensible way to cap a big-ticket trip before you walk in, since the electronics aisle is where budgets go to die - a set of wireless headphones bought deliberately beats one bought because it was stacked by the entrance.

The Card Inside Apple Pay Is the Whole Answer

Every version of this question resolves the same way. Costco accepts Apple Pay in the warehouse and at the pump, refuses every credit network except Visa, and does not list Apple Pay for its website at all. So the only preparation that matters is which card is sitting at the front of your Wallet before you reach the reader. Other big-box chains have gone in different directions on the same question: Target takes Apple Pay everywhere with no network restriction, while Walmart still refuses it outright. If you would rather set the amount before you shop, or hand a non-member something they can actually spend, buy a Costco gift card and pay for it with Apple Pay.
