Summary: Three tiers, and all of them went up on 20 May 2026. Essential is now $10.99 a month, Extra $16.99 and Premium $19.99 in the US. Sony left the annual plans alone in that round, which makes paying yearly the only way to hold the old rate and the single most useful thing to know about PS Plus pricing right now. None of the tiers gives you new PlayStation exclusives at launch.
- Monthly US prices: Essential $10.99, Extra $16.99, Premium $19.99.
- The May 2026 rise hit monthly and three-month plans. Annual plans were left unchanged.
- PS Plus is built around monthly games, a back catalogue and classics, not day-one releases.
- Online multiplayer for most games sits behind Essential, so the cheapest tier is effectively mandatory for PS5 owners who play online.
PS Plus Price by Tier
US monthly list prices following the May 2026 increase. PS Plus is regionally priced, so check your own store, and remember the three-month and twelve-month options change the effective rate considerably.
- Essential, $10.99. Online multiplayer, cloud saves, monthly games and store discounts. Up from $9.99.
- Extra, $16.99. Everything in Essential plus the Game Catalog of several hundred PS4 and PS5 titles. Up from $14.99.
- Premium, $19.99. Adds the Classics Catalog, cloud streaming and time-limited game trials. Up from $17.99.
Essential is the one most people are really buying, because online play in most multiplayer games requires it. That makes the dollar increase there less of a choice than it looks: for a household playing anything competitive, it is a cost of owning the console rather than an optional extra.

The Annual Plan Loophole
This is the part worth acting on. When Sony raised prices in May 2026, it raised the monthly and three-month plans and left the twelve-month plans where they were. Annual PS Plus was already the cheapest way to hold a subscription per month, and the gap has now widened further.
So if you know you are keeping PS Plus for the year, the monthly plan is now the expensive way to buy exactly the same thing. The obvious caveat is that twelve months is a long commitment to a library you have not seen yet, and Sony has raised annual pricing in previous rounds, so it is a rate held rather than a rate locked forever.
What You Actually Get for the Money
The structural difference between Sony's service and Microsoft's is worth being blunt about, because it decides whether the price is fair. PS Plus does not put new PlayStation exclusives into the catalogue at launch. A new first-party game costs full price on release day whether you subscribe or not.
What you get instead is breadth after the fact: a rotating monthly handful at Essential, several hundred older titles at Extra, and a genuine archive of PlayStation history at Premium. Judged as a back catalogue subscription it is good value. Judged as a way to avoid buying new games, it is not what it does. We put both services side by side in PlayStation Plus versus Xbox Game Pass.
For comparison on price alone, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate sits at $22.99 a month and does include day-one first-party releases, while its cheapest tier is $9.99. Sony is cheaper at the top and dearer at the bottom, which is a reversal of how the two were positioned a couple of years ago.
Paying Less Than List
- Buy the twelve-month plan if you are staying, since it dodged the May increase.
- Watch for discounted subscription codes around store sales, which appear more often than console discounts do.
- Stacking works. Time bought as a code adds to the end of an existing subscription rather than replacing it.
- Upgrading mid-term is charged pro rata, so moving from Essential to Extra part-way through a year does not waste what you paid.
Codes are also where third-party sellers come in. Marketplaces like Kinguin and Fanatical list subscription time alongside games, often below list. Check the region on any code before buying, because a subscription code from the wrong store will not redeem, and read our note on gift cards and region locking if you are tempted by a cheaper foreign price.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is PS Plus a month?
In the US, $10.99 for Essential, $16.99 for Extra and $19.99 for Premium since May 2026.
Did PS Plus go up in price?
Yes, on 20 May 2026, across monthly and three-month plans. Annual plans were not increased in that round.
Do I need PS Plus to play online?
For most games, yes, and Essential is the tier that covers it. A few free-to-play titles are exempt.
Is Premium worth the extra over Extra?
Only if you want the classic library, cloud streaming or trials. The modern catalogue is the same at both tiers.
Can I keep the monthly games if I cancel?
No. Access to claimed monthly titles and catalogue games ends with the subscription, unlike a purchased game.
Buy the Year, Not the Month
If you own a PS5 and play anything online, Essential is not really optional, so the question is only how you pay for it. With monthly rates up and annual rates untouched, the twelve-month plan is the clear answer for anyone staying put, and Extra is worth the step up only if you will actually work through the catalogue. Prices quoted here are US list as of September 2026.
If you would rather top up the wallet and buy the plan from a balance than leave a card on the account, browse PlayStation gift cards and pay for the subscription from that.
