Summary: Augur is a decentralized prediction market on Ethereum, first funded in 2015 and launched in 2018. Users bet on the outcome of real events, and holders of its REP token act as the oracle that reports what actually happened. The project went quiet after 2020, but a revival led by the Lituus Foundation began in 2025, with plans that require REPv2 holders to migrate to a new token.

  • Augur was one of the first decentralized apps built on Ethereum.
  • REP, short for Reputation, is staked to report and dispute market outcomes.
  • REP holders had to migrate to REPv2 in 2020, and a further migration is part of the revival plans.
  • Prediction markets are regulated as gambling or derivatives in many countries.

What Is Augur?

Augur held its token sale in 2015, before Ethereum's mainnet had even launched, which makes it one of the oldest projects in decentralized finance. Its idea was a prediction market with no company in the middle: anyone could create a market on an event, anyone could trade on it, and the result would be settled by the crowd rather than by an operator.

Augur v1 launched in July 2018 and v2 followed in July 2020. Usage stayed low, partly because Ethereum fees made small trades expensive, and development slowed. Newer platforms later made prediction markets mainstream, but Augur pioneered much of the design they built on.

How the Augur Blockchain Prediction Market Works

  • Create: a user opens a market on a question, such as who will win an election, and sets when it ends.
  • Trade: participants buy shares in outcomes. A share's price reflects the crowd's estimate of how likely that outcome is.
  • Report: when the event ends, a reporter stakes REP on the result.
  • Dispute: anyone who disagrees can stake REP on another outcome. Rounds escalate, and in a serious disagreement the whole system forks, with REP holders choosing which version of reality to follow.
  • Settle: winning shares pay out, honest reporters earn fees, and those who backed false outcomes lose their stake.

What Is the Augur REP Token?

REP isn't the currency people bet with. It's a work token for the oracle: holding and staking REP gives you the right, and the duty, to report outcomes and earn fees for doing it correctly. There are 11 million REP in total.

With v2 in 2020, holders had to migrate their original REP to REPv2 manually. Tokens that were never migrated can't take part in v2 markets or forks, which is one reason to check exactly which version you hold.

The 2025 Augur Revival

In 2025 the Lituus Foundation took up development. Its plans run on two tracks: a new prediction market system and Augur Lituus, a general-purpose oracle other apps could use. The roadmap includes a fork in 2026 that requires REPv2 holders to migrate to a new token. Timelines in crypto revivals often slip, so follow Augur's official channels for current dates and instructions rather than third-party posts.

Risks of Holding REP

  • Migration risk: missing a required migration can leave tokens unable to participate, or worthless.
  • Liquidity: REP trades thinly and is listed on few major exchanges.
  • Legal: betting on events is restricted or banned in many places, whatever the technology.
  • Scams: migrations attract fake claim sites. Use official links only, and secure your connection with a VPN like NordVPN on public Wi-Fi.

Where to Keep REP

REP is an ERC-20 token, so any Ethereum wallet can hold it. If you plan to take part in a migration, a self-custody wallet makes the process easier than leaving tokens on an exchange that may or may not support it. A hardware wallet such as Tangem keeps your keys offline while still letting you sign the transactions a migration needs.

Augur in a Few Lines

Augur is a pioneer that never quite found its audience, now getting a second chance. If you hold REP, the most important job is keeping up with migration requirements. If you're new, treat it as a high-risk, early-stage bet on a revival rather than an established platform.
