Summary: DigiByte (DGB) is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency launched in 2014 and built on code derived from Bitcoin. It confirms blocks every 15 seconds and splits mining across five different algorithms, so no single type of mining hardware can dominate the network. It has no company or ICO behind it, and DGB is held in dedicated or multi-coin wallets and bought on a handful of exchanges.
- Blocks every 15 seconds make DigiByte much faster than Bitcoin.
- Five mining algorithms spread the work between ASICs, GPUs and CPUs.
- The supply is capped at 21 billion DGB, with issuance shrinking a little every month.
- Fewer large exchanges list DGB than the big coins, so check availability before you buy.
What Is DigiByte?
DigiByte was created by Jared Tate and launched in January 2014. Like Bitcoin, it is an open, permissionless blockchain secured by mining, with no company in charge and no tokens sold to investors before launch. Development is run by volunteers and a community foundation.
The project's selling points are speed and security rather than smart contracts. DigiByte was one of the first networks to activate SegWit in 2017, and its DigiShield difficulty adjustment, which reacts quickly to changes in mining power, was later adopted by several other coins, including Dogecoin.
How DigiByte Crypto Works
- Block time: 15 seconds, compared with about 10 minutes for Bitcoin, so payments confirm quickly.
- Fees: typically a fraction of a cent per transaction.
- Supply: a hard cap of 21 billion DGB, with the full supply expected to be mined around 2035.
- Model: a UTXO blockchain like Bitcoin, so wallets and tools built for Bitcoin often adapt easily.
DigiByte also has DigiAssets, a layer for issuing tokens and records on top of the chain, though it sees far less use than token platforms such as Ethereum.
DigiByte Mining and Its Five Algorithms
This is DigiByte's most distinctive feature. Bitcoin mining uses one algorithm, SHA-256, which means specialized ASIC machines win nearly every block. DigiByte splits block production across five algorithms: SHA-256, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit and Odocrypt. Each gets roughly a fifth of the blocks, and each has its own difficulty.
The idea is that an attacker would need to control most of the mining power across several very different types of hardware at once, which is far harder than buying up one kind of machine. Odocrypt also changes itself every ten days to resist ASICs, which keeps that slot open to FPGA and smaller miners.
Can you mine DGB at home? Technically yes, especially through a mining pool, but the returns rarely cover electricity and hardware costs. Most people who want DGB simply buy it.

Choosing a DigiByte Wallet
- DigiByte Mobile and DigiByte Core: the community-maintained official wallets, mobile and desktop.
- Multi-coin apps: several popular mobile and desktop wallets support DGB alongside other coins.
- Hardware: for larger holdings, a hardware wallet such as Tangem keeps your keys offline. Confirm DGB support in the maker's coin list before you buy one.
Whatever you choose, back up your recovery phrase offline. Anyone who has it can take your DGB, and nobody can restore it for you if it is lost.
How to Buy DigiByte
DGB is listed on fewer exchanges than larger coins, and some regions have no local option. The usual route is to buy a major coin such as Bitcoin or USDT on a regulated exchange, then trade it for DGB on an exchange that lists it. Check the deposit network, compare trading and withdrawal fees, and move your DGB to your own wallet afterwards.
Smaller coins also attract fake wallet apps and lookalike exchange sites. Download wallets only from official links, and use a VPN such as NordVPN when you log in to exchanges away from home.
DigiByte Price Predictions and News
DGB has a large and loyal community, and price prediction pages are everywhere. Treat them with caution. DGB trades far below its 2018 peak, its liquidity is thin, and small coins can move sharply on little news. Follow the project's official channels for real updates, and size any position to what you could afford to lose.
Who DigiByte Suits Best
DigiByte appeals to people who like Bitcoin's model but want faster blocks and a more varied mining base. It is a long-running, genuinely decentralized project, but with less exchange support and adoption than the largest coins. Learn how it works, choose a wallet you trust and keep your recovery phrase safe.
