Summary: The Steam Deck OLED is still the better handheld for most people, with a superb OLED screen, long battery life and the polished SteamOS. The ROG Xbox Ally X is faster and runs Windows, so it plays every PC store and Game Pass, but it costs more. After Valve's May 2026 price increase, the gap between them is much smaller than it used to be.

  • Steam Deck OLED: $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB after Valve's May 2026 increase.
  • ROG Xbox Ally: $599.99, and ROG Xbox Ally X: $999.99.
  • The Ally X is noticeably faster, but the Deck OLED has the better screen and battery life.
  • Windows on the Ally opens every PC store, while SteamOS is simpler and more console-like.

The ROG Ally vs Steam Deck question has changed in 2026. Asus replaced its original Ally with the ROG Xbox Ally range in October 2025, and Valve raised Steam Deck prices in May 2026, citing component costs. The value gap that made the Deck an easy choice has narrowed.

The Current Models and Prices

  • Steam Deck OLED 512GB: $789, up from $549.
  • Steam Deck OLED 1TB: $949, up from $649.
  • ROG Xbox Ally: $599.99, with an AMD Ryzen Z2 A chip.
  • ROG Xbox Ally X: $999.99, with an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip.

The base ROG Xbox Ally now undercuts the Steam Deck OLED, but its chip is closer to the Deck's in power. The Ally X is the one that clearly outperforms it. Older models, like the original ROG Ally and the LCD Steam Deck, can still be found, but they are older hardware.

Performance

The ROG Xbox Ally X is the fastest of the group by a clear margin, running demanding games at higher frame rates and resolutions. Its chip is several generations newer than the Steam Deck's, and it has more memory. The base ROG Xbox Ally performs much closer to the Steam Deck OLED.

If you mostly play indie games, older titles or games designed with the Steam Deck in mind, the Deck OLED is more than enough. If you want to play the latest big releases at better settings, the Ally X is worth considering.

Screen and Battery Life

The Steam Deck OLED has a 7.4-inch HDR OLED screen with excellent contrast and brightness, and it is one of the best screens on any handheld. The Ally models use 7-inch 1080p IPS screens with a 120Hz refresh rate, which are sharper but less vivid.

Battery life favors the Deck at lower power settings, thanks to SteamOS and its efficient chip. The Ally X has a larger 80Wh battery, but it draws more power in demanding games. The Deck is also lighter, at around 640g against the Ally X's roughly 715g.

Windows vs SteamOS

This is the biggest practical difference. The Ally runs Windows 11 with the Xbox full-screen experience, so it plays games from Steam, Xbox and Game Pass, Epic, GOG and every other PC store. The downside is that Windows can still feel fiddly on a small screen.

The Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which feels like a console: it boots straight into your library, suspends and resumes instantly, and just works for most Steam games. Other stores are possible but need workarounds. Valve has also added official SteamOS support for the ROG Ally in 2026, which gives Ally owners another option.

Which Handheld to Buy

  • Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you mainly play on Steam and want the best screen, battery life and ease of use.
  • Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if you want the most performance and access to Game Pass and every PC store.
  • Choose the base ROG Xbox Ally if you want Windows at the lowest price and do not need top performance.

The Short Version for Handheld Shoppers

For most players, the Steam Deck OLED is still the handheld to beat, even at its higher price. Pay more for the Ally X only if you know you want the extra power or need games outside Steam. Either way, your library is the long-term investment, so it helps to have a way to top up your store balance.
