Summary: The Steam Winter Sale 2026 runs from 17 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, opening and closing at 10:00 AM Pacific. At 18 days it is the longest seasonal sale Valve runs and the only one that crosses into the new year. The discount you see on the first morning is the same one you will see on the last, so there is nothing to gain by waiting the sale out.

  • Dates: 17 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, published in advance on Valve's Steamworks calendar.
  • Prices do not fall further as the sale runs. Day one and day eighteen cost the same.
  • There is no seasonal Steam sale at Black Friday. Late November discounts run through the Special Offers hub instead.
  • Games released in the 30 days before the sale starts cannot open at a discount, though they can join late once that cooldown ends.

When Is the Steam Winter Sale 2026?

The Steam Winter Sale 2026 opens on 17 December 2026 and closes on 4 January 2027. Both ends land at 10:00 AM Pacific, which is 1:00 PM Eastern and 6:00 PM in London. This is not a prediction. Valve published its second half 2026 schedule through Steamworks, the developer facing side of Steam, which is why the dates circulate weeks before any banner appears on the storefront. The rest of the calendar, including the themed fests between now and December, is in our guide to when the next Steam sale runs.

When Does the Steam Winter Sale End?

It ends on the morning of 4 January 2027, at 10:00 AM Pacific rather than at the end of that day. That is worth knowing if you are travelling over the holidays and planning to buy on the last day. At 18 days the Winter Sale is the longest of the four seasonal sales, and the only one that runs across the new year.

Is There a Steam Black Friday Sale?

Not a seasonal one. The Winter Sale does not begin at Black Friday, and no other storewide sale falls near it. The idea comes from the old schedule: until 2024 the Autumn Sale ran during Thanksgiving week, close enough to Black Friday that the two blurred together. Valve moved the Autumn Sale to early October in 2025 and kept it there in 2026, when it ran from 1 to 8 October.

Late November is not empty. Steam keeps discounts running through its Special Offers hub across that stretch, and in 2025 it added a dedicated Black Friday event alongside the Steam Awards nominations. What you will not find in November is a storewide sale with the depth of the Winter Sale.

Should You Wait for the Steam Winter Sale?

Once the sale is live, waiting gains you nothing. Valve retired flash sales and daily deals back in 2015, so the discount a game carries on 17 December is the same discount it carries on 4 January. Holding off until the final weekend only means you spend the holidays not playing it.

The wait that does matter is the one before the sale. With the Autumn Sale now finishing on 8 October, roughly ten weeks separate the last two sales of the year, where the old schedule left about three. The gap is quieter than it used to be, though not empty: Steam runs themed fests with curated discounts most months, and third-party key stores such as CDKeys keep discounting straight through it.

How Deep the Discounts Actually Go

Summer and Winter carry the steepest cuts of the four seasonal sales. The trade off with Winter is the release calendar. It follows the autumn launch window, so the newest and biggest titles are the ones most likely to hold back or offer a token percentage. The deep numbers sit on back catalogue games, complete editions and releases from a year or two ago.

Taking part is optional for developers, and there is a timing rule worth knowing. Valve's Steamworks documentation on seasonal sales says a discount generally cannot be submitted within 30 days of a game's release or of a price increase. For a 17 December opening that puts the cutoff around 17 November 2026. It is not an absolute bar, though. If that 30 day cooldown ends partway through the sale, the game can join late rather than sitting the whole event out.

Where Else Steam Keys Get Discounted

Steam's own sale is not the only price on a game. Third-party key stores run seasonal sales that overlap the Winter Sale, and Fanatical is one of the larger ones for Steam keys. The trade off is what you end up holding. A key activates one specific game on your account, while wallet funds can go toward anything in the store, including DLC and in-game purchases. Region locks and activation limits are the things to check first, which we went through in our guide to how Steam keys work.

Using Your Wishlist Before 17 December

The wishlist is the only part of the sale that works on your behalf. Steam emails you when a wishlisted game goes on sale, but only when the cut is 20 percent or more, so shallower discounts pass you by unless you go looking. Across an 18 day event covering thousands of titles, that notification is the difference between catching something and never seeing it.

  • Add everything you are considering before 17 December, not once the sale is already running.
  • Check the price history on anything expensive, so you can tell a genuine low from a repeat of the summer price.
  • Sort the wishlist by discount when the sale opens rather than scrolling the front page.

The Steam Awards During the Sale

Voting for the Steam Awards runs during the Winter Sale, as it has for years. Nominations happen earlier, in late November, and stayed there when the Autumn Sale moved to October. Voting costs nothing and takes a minute, and it is the one part of the sale that is not asking you to spend anything.

Paying With a Steam Gift Card

A Steam gift card loads funds into your Steam Wallet, and the wallet then pays for anything in the store. Valve has discontinued the physical cards, so the digital code is the version you will actually find now, which we covered in more detail when physical Steam gift cards disappeared.

A wallet balance earns its place in a sale for two plain reasons. It caps what you can spend across an event built to keep pulling you back for 18 days. And it lets you buy without keeping a card on file, or hand the funds to someone else without picking the game for them.

Buy on Day One or Day Eighteen, the Price Is the Same

The Winter Sale rewards preparation rather than timing. Build the wishlist before 17 December, check the price history on anything expensive, and buy when you see the discount instead of holding out for a better one that is not coming. To have the funds sitting in your wallet before the sale opens, browse Steam gift cards and top up in advance.
