We’re announcing a major upgrade to our checkout experience: WalletConnect integration is now live!
Thanks to this update, customers can now pay invoices using hundreds of their favorite wallets across the Ethereum, Solana, and Bitcoin networks safely, securely, and seamlessly.
What is WalletConnect?
WalletConnect is an open-source protocol that securely links your crypto wallet to decentralized applications (dApps) across multiple blockchains.
Since its launch in 2018, WalletConnect has powered over 292 million connections for 42.5 million users and was instrumental in bridging the gap between wallets and Web3 services.
- Wallet compatibility: MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Backpack, Rainbow, and over 500 others.
- Seamless UI: Just scan a QR code or connect in-browser — no manual input for wallets or amounts needed.
- Multi-chain support: Ethereum, Solana, and Bitcoin.
- Security first: Private keys are never shared; signing happens within your wallet.
How CoinGate Uses WalletConnect to Offer a Better Service
We’ve integrated WalletConnect directly into our checkout flow to offer a smoother, faster, and more secure way to pay with crypto wallets.
Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes when a user selects WalletConnect:
1. Payment initiation
When a customer chooses “Pay with WalletConnect” at checkout, they are offered two options:
- Connect directly in-browser (if the wallet supports it).
- Scan a QR code using any WalletConnect-compatible wallet app (like MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Backpack, etc.).
This triggers the WalletConnect protocol to establish a secure, encrypted link between the user’s wallet and CoinGate’s payment page.
2. Wallet connection and currency selection
Once connected, the system checks:
- If the wallet is properly connected to the correct network (Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin).
- Whether the user’s wallet has a sufficient balance to cover the payment.
The shopper then selects the cryptocurrency they wish to pay with from a list filtered based on their available wallet balances.
3. Billing details
If necessary, users are prompted to fill out personal details before proceeding, ensuring we meet regulatory requirements.
4. Transaction approval
The payment details (amount, address, network) are displayed, and the user is prompted to sign and approve the transaction inside their connected wallet.
Importantly:
- The user’s private keys are never exposed to CoinGate or any third party.
- All signing happens securely within the user’s wallet app.
5. On-chain payment confirmation
Once the user signs and approves the payment:
- The transaction is broadcasted to the blockchain.
- Our system monitors the blockchain for the transaction confirmation.
- When detected, the CoinGate invoice is automatically marked as paid, and the merchant is notified.
In short:
We’ve partnered with ReOwn, the company behind WalletConnect, to implement it into our system.
This is to ensure that the connection between the user’s wallet and our payment interface is secure, real-time, and fault-tolerant.
CoinGate acts as a merchant payment processor. Meanwhile, WalletConnect serves as a secure bridge between the user’s wallet and our payment checkout. As a result, users enjoy a smooth, secure, no-exchange-needed payment experience across multiple blockchains.
How to Use WalletConnect Payments at CoinGate
The process is highly intuitive. Here’s how you can use WalletConnect to pay:
1. Start your checkout
Visit a CoinGate-supported merchant checkout page and proceed to the payment screen.

2. Select WalletConnect
In the list of payment methods, choose “Pay with WalletConnect.”

3. Connect your wallet
Pick your wallet from the list and connect directly in-browser.

Alternatively, scan the QR code shown with your mobile wallet app.

4. Approve the connection
Confirm the WalletConnect request inside your wallet.
5. Select cryptocurrency
Choose a currency you want to pay with (Ethereum, USDC, Bitcoin, etc.). Only funded wallets will be allowed to proceed.

6. Fill out billing details
Quickly submit necessary information if required for compliance.

7. Confirm and sign the transaction
Approve the transaction in your wallet — no exchanges, no copying addresses manually.
8. Wait for payment confirmation
Once confirmed, the payment is registered on-chain, and your invoice is marked as paid!

Why All of This Matters
The key benefit of this integration is that all payment details are delivered directly to the buyer’s wallet—there’s no need to copy and paste wallet addresses or amounts manually.
This greatly reduces the risk of errors such as overpayments, underpayments, or sending funds on the wrong network or with the wrong cryptocurrency.
To sum it up:
- Faster checkout: Skip exchanges and intermediaries — pay directly from your wallet
- Enhanced security: WalletConnect’s encryption ensures your private keys stay private.
- Greater flexibility: Choose from hundreds of WalletConnect-supported wallets across multiple blockchains.
- Mobile-friendly: Easily complete payments directly from your phone.
