Our Humble Beginnings

Before CoinGate was officially founded in 2014, our co-founders ran multiple small ventures, including a local taxi company. It had a small but important twist—we accepted Bitcoin payments for rides. This was a time when cryptocurrency was still in its infancy, but even then, we recognized the potential of digital currencies. There were no providers at the time to facilitate these payments, and so we had to create our own custom-built payment system. Little did we know, this system would soon take up all our attention.

By 2014, we had a realization: our Bitcoin payment system had more potential than the original use case it had been created for. That’s when CoinGate was born. We shifted our focus entirely to cryptocurrency payment processing, and in doing so, set the foundation for what would become a decade of innovation and growth.

Building the Future of Cryptocurrency Payments

Starting out as a small team in 2014, our mission was simple yet ambitious—make it easy for businesses to accept cryptocurrency payments. In those early days, the idea of paying with Bitcoin or any cryptocurrency was novel, and few businesses were willing to take the plunge. But we were determined to change that.

By 2015, CoinGate was officially live, and it didn’t take long for us to start making waves. Over the next few years, we grew our client base and expanded our services. In 2016, we celebrated 1,000 registered users, and by 2017, we had processed over 100,000 payments. These milestones were significant, as they demonstrated that businesses were beginning to see the value of accepting cryptocurrency.

Our innovation didn’t stop there. In 2018, we were one of the first to introduce support for the Bitcoin Lightning Network, which allowed faster and cheaper transactions for merchants. We also expanded to support new cryptocurrencies like Litecoin, Ethereum, and later, XRP and Tron, making CoinGate one of the most versatile payment processors in the crypto space.

Scaling Our Services and Expanding Horizons

As the cryptocurrency landscape evolved, so did we. Between 2018 and 2020, CoinGate underwent rapid expansion. We introduced more features for businesses, such as full and partial refund capabilities, account management tools, and integrations with major e-commerce platforms like PrestaShop and WooCommerce.

coingate early years

In 2020, we hit a major milestone—processing over 1 million orders. That same year, we expanded our crypto purchase options to include credit cards, launched a referral program, and revamped our website to better serve our growing user base. It was a period of significant growth, both in terms of users and functionality.

By 2021, we had expanded our list of accepted cryptocurrencies, added Apple Pay as a payment option, and continued to enhance our platform’s flexibility and ease of use for merchants. We also integrated Binance Pay, further solidifying our position as a global crypto payments leader.

Gaining the Momentum

In 2022, we continued to build on our momentum with several key updates:

In 2023, we took our innovations even further:

  • Began implementation of BRC-20 token support.
  • Added Arbitrum network support.
  • Continued to refine our merchant account functionality and support for multiple networks and tokens.

A New Chapter in CoinGate’s Evolution

As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we are excited to share that CoinGate is entering a new era. We’re no longer just a payment processor—we are evolving into a full-fledged financial institution, capable of meeting a wider range of business needs.

In the coming days, weeks and months, we will be unveiling even more products that will help businesses interact with crypto more seamlessly than ever before. From enhanced payment tools to broader currency conversion options, we’re focused on ensuring that CoinGate remains at the forefront of the crypto-financial ecosystem.

Additionally, CoinGate is in the process of applying for a license to become a financial institution, which will allow us to offer a wider array of services and further legitimize cryptocurrency as a mainstream financial tool. With a new CEO at the helm and a clear vision for the future, we are thrilled to continue driving growth and innovation for years to come.

Thank You for Being Part of Our 10-Year Journey

To our clients, partners, and supporters—thank you for being with us every step of the way. From our humble beginnings to becoming a global financial technology provider, none of this would have been possible without your trust and loyalty. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are more excited than ever about what the future holds.

Here’s to the next decade of innovation, growth, and continued success!
