A BitPay alternative open to the EU

BitPay has paused new onboarding in the EEA, the UK and Australia. Meanwhile, CoinGate is MiCA-licensed and onboarding EU businesses now. Below is how the two compare on fees, payouts, refunds and settlement.

A BitPay alternative open to the EU

Why do EU businesses skip BitPay?

New EEA sign-ups are paused

BitPay lists the EEA, the UK and Australia as “Currently Paused for new onboarding”. Last updated 21 September 2026.

Some customers need a BitPay ID

BitPay asks for a one-time ID check on purchases over $3,000. Refund and payout recipients and VPN users need one too.

BitPay adds 25¢ per payment

That’s on top of a 1–2% fee that depends on your monthly volume. At CoinGate it’s 1% on Standard, with no monthly, setup or integration fees.

CoinGate vs BitPay, side by side

Checkout is only part of it. Here’s how payouts, invoices, refunds and settlement compare too.

10,000 orders a month, at list price

Say you sell $400,000 a month in $40 orders. That’s below BitPay’s first volume threshold, so it charges 2% + 25¢ per order: $10,500. CoinGate Standard charges 1%: $4,000.

Processing fees only. Network fees, conversion and payouts aren’t included, and BitPay notes higher fees for high-risk industries.

Coming from BitPay?

Questions about switching

Can EU businesses still sign up with BitPay?

Not for now. BitPay’s supported-countries page, last updated 21 September 2026, lists the EEA as “Currently Paused for new onboarding”. The UK and Australia are paused too.

Is BitPay licensed under MiCA?

Yes. ESMA’s register lists BitPay B.V. as authorised by the Dutch AFM on 16 July 2026. CoinGate’s operator, UAB Decentralized, was authorised by the Bank of Lithuania on 16 December 2025.

What are BitPay's fees?

2% + 25¢ per transaction below $500,000 a month, 1.5% + 25¢ up to $999,999 and 1% + 25¢ from $1,000,000. BitPay notes higher fees for high-risk industries. Payouts cost 1%.

Which is better, BitPay or CoinGate?

It depends on where you are and what you need. If you’re in the EEA, BitPay isn’t onboarding new merchants right now. If you also pay people, BitPay asks payout recipients to pass its KYC. CoinGate recipients need only a wallet.

Can I pay people without collecting wallet addresses?

Yes. Payout Links need only the recipient’s email. They add their own wallet and network, then confirm with a code sent to that email.

Can I settle in euros?

Yes. Settle in EUR, GBP or USD, in USDC or EURC, or in crypto. If you don’t choose, orders settle in USDC.
